Service was terrible
PostedOctober 18, 2012
I visited in October 2012. The place is beautiful but the services is terrible. Also I left my new iphone recharging while I grabbed breakfast and when I returned it was gone. I called the hotel security which were not helpful at all! They said they would investigate but never heard back from anyone even when I tried to track someone down, I didn't get anywhere. The food is not great either. I was very disappointed. Internet not free and the local town was really far.

Really lovely
PostedSeptember 10, 2012
Dreams is a phenomenal resort. The people are beyond friendly and helpful. The grounds are stunning and very clean. The food was quite good, very timely and no complaints ( just not out of this world). The hotel gives you enough options to participate in activities or decline. The restaurants were stunning inside, all of the different cuisines authentic and great. Overall... muy exelente.

Preferred Club level for our 10 year anniversary
PostedSeptember 6, 2012
When we booked this, we read all the reviews, and decided to spring for the club level, and I am pleased as punch we did.
Room: All the aesthetics of the rooms were great. Bed was comfy enough, and the second floor view of the pool was nice. Complimentary wifi for Preferred Club in our room, we brought our lap top to stay in touch with our kids back home. Fridge was stocked with beer, water, soda, and juice boxes. Coffee maker was nice to have, though we didn't use it since there is a coffee bar. There was a DVD player, and most channels are spanish, though HBO and a NY ABC channel as well as TLC were broadcast in English. I watched the tube before bed. Bathroom stocked with towels, and a nice assortment of toiletries. There was even a bottle of sunscreen!
Pools: We are not party'rs , we are reaching for 40 here soon. So we opted for the relaxed atmosphere of the Club pool when possible. We did venture briefly into both of the other pools, and were first met by the locals selling the stuff at various table. Yes, we spent money on stuff we really didn't need. I figure we asked for it. Plus, the country is very poor, we are helping their local economy. They are only at the main pool a few hours a day on certain days. Just an FYI. The other pool with the swim up bar was GROSS. Water was murky, and when I got to the bar, it smelled like rotten garbage. We then turned, left, and went to the preferred pool. The preferred pool was always calm with the people, and always had a chair available to lounge on. The pool bar was ALWAYS clean, always made top shelf drinks, and NEVER smelled, unlike a few of the others. Again, this is why we paid a little more for the upgrade.
Bars: The best bars were the Lobby bar, and the bar next to the Seaside Grill. Also the preferred Bar at the pool. The other bars smelled, looked dirty, and were under staffed.
Dining: BRING SLACKS! The two better restaurants will not seat you if you do not wear pants. Hubby left his home, so we did not get to try them. We did try The Seaside for dinner and lunch. Both meals were good. Seaside is right on the water front, so it is a very pretty place to dine. The World Buffet is the only place for breakfast, unless you order room service, which is also included in the All Inclusive Resort. We dined at the Asian restaurant one evening, and really enjoyed all of the food there. We usually ate lunch at the World Buffet, just for ease. Quick and easy to get in and out of so we can spend more time on the beach.
Beach: Preferred Club offers a private beach lounging area with little cabana like tikis. PERFECT!!! our last day had rain, so we were very content to be held up underneath reading and napping till the shower passed. The main beach does not have any shaded or covered areas unless you drag a chair into the shade. The sand is soft, and won't cut up your feet. Bring your snorkel and mask, and swim right off the beach. Hubby and I took a little Snorkel tour for $25 each, and it went a bit from the beach, but still stayed in the cove. Glad we did it, but much of the coral is dead, and inundated with sea urchins. Maybe a SCUBA tour would be better, but we passed on that this trip.
Transportation: We flew into Santo Domingo which is a 1 1/2 hour ride from the resort. If possible, fly into La Romana. It is only 20 minutes away. Otherwise, expect to see the cultural parts of the Dominican as you drive through a number of small towns on the way to the resort.
Activities: Every night you get a schedule for the next day and it has the restaurants that will be open, the activities, and times everything gets started. The evening entertainment was okay. Not Broadway or anything to write home about.
Tips: Tips are included in the ALL INCLUSIVE package, but if you want service, you should tip. Otherwise, expect a nod, but no smile.
Language: SPANISH, and I am not a Spanish speaker. The only thing you need to know how to say is your drink order ; )
OVERALL, I say spring for the Preferred unless you want to be part of the party scene, and rather loud music at the pools. We went for our anniversary, and we both wanted to have just time together, so we choose the route we took. I LOVE the all inclusive resorts, it is the way to go if you are looking for a care free vacation.

Great Wedding At Dreams!!!
PostedAugust 3, 2012
I brought 43 people with me for a wedding and have been to several all inclusive hotels before.
Pros: Jenny G., the wedding planner, is an amazing person to work with. She was organized, calm, pleasant, and had great suggestions for me. The day of the wedding, she was running the show, and I felt completely comfortable with putting everything into her hands! The ceremony was beautiful performed by Elke, the Spa manager. Reception was at Bordeaux and the place was very cozy and well decorated. Every detail I asked for, cigar roller, fireworks, vodka bar, LCD projector, was set up and execited perfectly! If you are looking for a hotel to have a wedding this is it!!!
Pros for Hotel stay: beach is clean, beautiful, pool is great, nice spa, clean modern rooms. We stayed in building 5 and our room was clean by the time we got back from the beach. Plenty of food to choose from, about 40% of it is just ok though. Burgers and pizza by the pool were awesome. The fresh fruit served on the beach is superb!!! The little coffe shop by lobby served the best coffee I have ever had! Drinks are decent if you ask for the right booze. Staff is incredibly friendly and they will try to please you especially if you tip a little. ( Alexis at beach bar made our stay fun!) Kenya served 9 of us a gorgeous lobster dinner on the deck!!! We felt like VIP!!! Portofino, Sea Side Grill, Himitsu were pretty good.
Cons: Service at the restaurants is very slow even for "vacation time". Althogh you do not have to make reservations, if you are with a group of people, prepare to wait up to an hour to get seated. Many mixed drinks were very sweet. (ask for more ice, be specific with your drink order). We went in July and the bees were relentless. More must be done to get them under control. I got stung twice and so did some of my guests. World Cafe needs more lighting, fans, improve food quality. (Steak was rubbery, no bacon or fresh orange juice at breakfast)
Overall: We went there for a wedding and they exceeded my expectations for a pretty great price compared to anything in US. We also went there for the beautiful scenery and they certainly have that. I would go back again and recommend this hotel. Just hope they improve the food a little.

Mostly horrible food, absolutly fabulous everything else!
PostedJune 16, 2012
Pros: All-inclusive. Scenery, rooms and grounds. Beach. Snorkeling & Diving. Pools. Fresh fruit. Coffee. Entertainment. Staff.
Cons: Food. Not enough shade. Beach not good for body surfing. Timeshare presentation. Drinks. Bike Tour. Spa.
Dreams La Romana is a good (but not great) value for the money. I’m not sure I’d go back because of the food, but I’m not sorry I went either. Almost everything else was spectacular, especially the snorkeling, the nightly entertainment and the wonderfully friendly staff.
All-inclusive: This was the first all-inclusive resort I’ve been too and the convenience of all-inclusive is wonderfully convenient. No need to carry a wallet, no worrying about currency conversion, everything available whenever you want.
Entertainment: They have nightly shows at 9:30, which were always great. Dancing, singing, magic, best couple competition, circus/acrobatics. Not quite Broadway, but the enthusiasm, variety and audience participation more than makes up for the small imperfections. We never missed a show. During the day, the entertainment staff teaches dance lessons and leads other activities. The entertainment was a very pleasant surprise.
Rooms: We had a standard (not preferred) garden view room with a king-size bed. Well maintained and clean. Plenty big. The walls were paper-thin though.
Health/Water: You can’t drink or brush with the water, but there’s plenty of bottled. Montezuma took his revenge one day, but I had cyprocycline from my travel doc, which took care of it.
Bugs: A few mosquitoes in our room at night, but no other bugs. We got only a few bites. We brought our own mosquito net that went over the bed. We never bothered with bug spray.
Food: The biggest drawback was the food. Everything was very salty. All the sauces tasted like some form of Campbell’s soup. Almost every dessert was too horrible to finish. Obviously food is a cost that can make a big difference in an all-inclusive’s bottom line so I had low expectations, but it was still worse than expected.
That said, there were some notable exceptions. The fresh fruit and fresh squeezed juices (not all of them are fresh squeezed) were wonderful. The coffee was also the best I’ve had (Starbucks is awful): plenty strong, not bitter, not sour, very rich. The doughnuts and cookies were also very good. I did like the red snapper at Oceana and the grilled chicken for lunch at the beach. The pizza was also surprisingly good most days when it got crispy (I think the weekend guy didn’t cook it long enough), and I’m usually very picky about pizza (won’t eat Dominos/Pizza Hut).
Drinks: The Champaign was very good. Mixed drinks were very sweet. Strawberry stuff was horrible and artificially flavored. They have “top shelf” Malabu, Absolute, Sapphire, Tanqueray and other, but I suspect they were watered down. My Tanqueray martini didn’t have the juniper bite I’m used to, but I keep mine in the freezer, so it could be a matter of temperature. Watering down isn’t that bad since it’s all you can drink. Worst case: saves you from wasting a day of vacation with a hangover. Try the Mamajuana, a Dominican specialty.
Beach: The beach is great. Warm water, great for swimming. The waves are too small for body surfing, but that makes is safe, even for kids.
Snorkeling and Diving: You can snorkel right in the swim area. I saw fish 18” long, lots of colors, lobsters, a stingray and sea urchins. Stay to the left side near the gri gri dive center. Diving was even better. It’s shallow (20-60 ft), meaning longer dives and more dives in a shorter time. I saw lots of rays, lionfish, moray eels, a cuttlefish, and tons of coral. I’ve dove the Great Barrier reef in Australia, Cancun, and Puerto Vallarta. This was the best.
Pools: Two great pools. Clean and plenty big, perfect temperature. Shade is a problem. I never saw more than half the shaded chairs in use, but guests “reserve” them by putting their towels on them, so then are usually none available by 10 AM. Always plenty of shaded chairs on the beach though. The main pool did have music, but it wasn’t too loud. The infinity pool had no music.
Tips: No one tips because there’s no other reason to carry money. We tried to tip everyone the day we left, which probably stiffed lots of the great wait staff and bar tenders. Sorry guys.
Timeshare presentation: The “special lunch” and tour is a timeshare presentation. Don’t bother. It’s probably a good deal if you travel lots (6+ weeks a year).
Bike tour: The tour just goes around the driveway, parking lot and main kitchen. Nothing interesting. The bikes are in disrepair. Flat tires, failing breaks, kickstands that won’t stay up.
Spa: Terrible massage. Not enough pressure. No technique or ability to find and fix those lumps. Don’t bother.

Great resort!
PostedMay 22, 2012
Overall we had a great experience- a group of 6 adults and we would definitely return to the Dreams.
The beach is amazing- barely any waves on the water, so swimming is a bliss. Very enjoyable sea water.
Pool with the swim-up bar was too noisy with all the young people drinking at the bar- thus we spent most of our time on the beach. We never went to the Main pool, mostly because there wasn't much shadow.
Great entertainment team- cheers to Eddie Murphy, Cappucino, La Foka and James Bond- they're the best! Lots of fun activities, but not very pushy.
Rooms definitely need updating- we were on the first floor and there were quite a lot of bugs in the room. This was a bit annoying, but we barely spent any time in the room. Two people from our group were on the third floor and it was much better.
We recommend Building #4- it's the closest to everything.
Big variety of food. The restaurants don't require reservations, which sometimes means waiting for a table, but at least you can choose any restaurant you want. The food in restaurants was very tasty, but the wait and hostess service was a little slow. Buffet was just OK- not the best.
The waitstaff at the beach is great- drinks delivered directly to your beach chair. Make sure you tip a little to get extra good service and ongoing attention from the waitress.
Nice night club- you feel like in a lounge in NYC. Also great lounging areas near the restaurants.
Medical services- horrible. Make sure you bring your own first aid kit and be prepared not to receive any help, when injured.

Nice Stay, but could have been better
PostedMay 9, 2012
It was a nice stay in this hotel, but not the best that i have been to. Food was not good. Entertainment was just ok. Out of 7 nights, we only had 3 shows at night. Hallways were very noisy from 6AM everyday, so you can's get any sleep. But the hotel looks very beautiful and clean. Nice beach with white sand. Nice relaxing place to enjoy beautiful weather and beach.

I think it is an important thing to know before going to this resort: teenagers might feel bored there because there are not a lot of entertainment for them.

Excellent! Great staff and service,
PostedDecember 6, 2011
WE just came back after 7 days at Dreams LaRomana. I will go back for sure. This was our first time in a All Inclusive Resort and it exceeded our expectations. The grounds are beautiful, the hotel service is excellent, cannot be any better, the food is great, so many places to choose from, more thatn 8 restaurants, never had to wait to be seaterd. The italian restaurant was the best, we went there twice during our stay. They have this huge buffet style for breakfast and lunch and the food was great.
We stayed at the preferred area and it's worst it. It depends if you want an area that is quite, peaceful and calm with wifi benefits so you don't have to pay extra go to the preferred ara is it worst it!! If you want to participate on the games and hang out with the crowds and noisy, then don't upgrade to the preferred area. We were on building 7 and didn't care the walk to the restaurants and the beach, it was so nice to walk the groounds that it didn't matter.
The beach was nice, not the most beautiful beach I have been, but the water was clear and white sands. They also have a preferred area at the beach and it was really nice.
I cannot say enough about the service of this hotel, they really make your vacation incredible from room service to the guy that serves the drinks at the pool. The hotel is really well kept, really big and beautiful grounds. I will recommend this hotel to anyone, specially upgrade to the preferred area, it' is worst it! I will go back for sure!

MAJOR security issue!!!
PostedJuly 8, 2011
I just returned from my brothers wedding at Dreams. I could not wait to get home to write this review and will do so on every travel site I can find. I wont complain too much about the 2 hour ride through filth from the airport in Santo Domingo because it is something you can not put into words. On arrival we were greeted with a much needed glass of champagne and then had to fight our way through the people at the desk trying to check in or out. No one behind the desk would make eye contact and it made the check in process miserable. We requested a king size bed with 2 roll away beds prior to our arrival and were given a room with two double beds. When we called to switch rooms no one seemed to speak english until the fourth person we were transfered to. We were told the hotel was booked and we could not be moved until the next day. We then went to the front desk later that day just to check if anything was available and to our surprise, they had a room available. We had to wait for someone to get all of our luggage..there are no elevators which makes getting around with anything heavy...including our sleeping children difficult and sweaty!! Once in our room we found it to be clean and comfortable with the exception of the roll away beds which smelled slightly of mold (not good for kids with asthma).
The food was pretty bad and everyone we were with ended up spending lots of time in the bathroom. The buffet in the World Cafe offered a large varitey for breakfast but the fruit was always surrounded by tons of flies which was gross. There was nothing on the dinner menu at all for children. We decided to order room service for them before we ate which became a problem because it took 2 hours each night to get our order. We ended up walking with the plates to whatever place the adults decided to eat.
The beach was man made and we often stubbed our toes on the large rocks and coral that were hidden on the bottom of the ocean floor. There is a trampoline just for kids which in my opinion was kind of far out for kids to get to on their own. The lounge chairs were kind of close together and there is a large volley ball game that goes on right next to your chairs.. I was hit in the head once and was not pleased. The pools were great and this is where we spent most of our time. One thing that I found to be kind of gross was the fact that the cups they made your drinks in at the bar were never really washed. They were rinsed in soapy water and put into a black garbage bag on the floor of the bar. If you are a non smoker this place is also not for you, everyone smokes everywhere.
My biggest problem with the resort was the SEVERE theft problem. My mother had a DVD player (which she hid in the closet under a towel) taken from her room. After calling to report it missing, securitly told her she left it in the lobby and it was in the lost and found, she also had her snorkle mask taken only to have it turn up in a drawer after security came to investigate. After telling the story to us at the pool several people overheard and came forward to say theat they too had noticed things missing from there room but they thought they had misplaced them. One woman had a Rolex that went missing, another a pair of shoes and another a necklace. They give you a safe for your important things but it can be unlocked using your room key...kind if stupid if there is a master key somewhere. I had taken off my diamond eternity band to put sunblock on my kids and forgot to put it back on. When I returned to my room to get itmy door was wide open, the ring was gone and there was no maid in sight. A few minutes later a maid came in to put towels in the room. I immediatly reported this to the fromt desk they sent up security who again spoke no english and told me they would run a report on who was in and out of the room. This never happened, I checked back everyday for three days and no one could give me an answer to who was in my room. Finally one of the employees suggested making a police report in the town. The police refused to come to the resort so my husband and father had to pay a cab to take them to the police station. The concierge came along to translate. The police took a report and basically made it seem like it was the resorts fault for waiting three days to file the report and would get to ot when they could. They then had to walk back through a poverty stricken area that riveled some of the worst neighborhoods either of them have ever seen. Needless to say I came home without my ring.
The main purpose for this trip was for my brothers wedding. The ceremony was to be held in an outdoor gazebo behind the resort. About an hour before the ceremony the heavens opened up and it poured relentlessly. The wedding coordinator never called us to give us direction on what the plan was in the event of rain so the guys stood in the un-air conditioned lobby while I made call after call trying to track her down. The ceremony finally took place 2 hours behind schedule and despite the aggravation was truly beautiful! The ceremony takes place in spanish and the wedding coordinator translates into english.
Overall if my ring hadnt been stolen out of the room it would have been a tolerable vacation. I had a hard time trusting the staff after the whole ordeal. I was very upset with the way things were handled and WILL be writing to the Dreams Headquarters ASAP.

We flew into La Romana airport that is about a 20 minute cab ride from the airport. What we were not told is that when you get off the plane, you need * US to be able to buy a travelers card that looks like a phone card. You aren't told why you have to buy it, just that everyone has to have one to get through customs. I later asked a guy at the passport stamping table (in Spanish) what the card was for and he said it was a required travelers tax (so know that up front), also prepare to have your bags checked before you leave the airport (they want to make sure you aren't bringing anything into the country). Onto the hotel, we were greeted with cookies and champagne, which was a nice surprise, but then we got to the room and it wasn't really what I had hoped. The bedroom looks like the picture on this description, but the bathroom is not shown for a reason, certain buildings are not renovated, make sure when you are getting a room, you are in building 4+ (buildings 1-3 are OLD and that is putting it nicely). I went back to the lobby to complain and was forwarded to the consierge who is a beautiful person and accomodated us very nicely. We enjoyed going to all of the restaurants there but BY FAR the best one is the Dominican one, don't expect great Italian or French food on an island, also, the meat is not as good as what we eat in the US (go on an excursion and see the cattle). Anyway, nice service, great scenery, beautiful and helpful people! Go into town and experience the island you won't be disappointed.

Had a really wonderful time!
PostedNovember 18, 2009
We had a fun experience. The food was good for an all inclusive. The French restaurant was the best meal we had there. The buffet was better than average as well (esp. for breakfast and lunch). If you are looking for a really quiet time you will need to escape to one of the smaller pools or beaches. The music (which starts at 10 am on the main beach) is fairly loud but lots of people were really enjoying themselves which is always contagious. We stayed in one of the renovated rooms and it was lovely. Very large, nice furniture and tv and the bed was VERY comfortable. The staff was wonderfully accomodating, friendly and professional. We ended up using our limited french to speak to some of the other guests and staff but were so delighted to do so. We are hoping to bring our friends to come back down with us!

Great vacation, but things you MUST beware of!!!

The resort itself was beautiful and nicely laid out. The design of the lobby and restaurants were exquisite. The food was terrific at some of the restaurants such as Bordeaux, Patio, Italian and Asian restaurants, and fair to poor in the main buffet and the Oceana. The beach was prestine, but watch out for the crabs! Both pools were very lovely and relaxing. The staff (although most don't speak English), tried their best and although not very helpful, were very friendly. If you are looking for peace and quiet, I would not advise getting a room in the vicinity of the main pool. There are loudspeakers with either DJ's or bands pumping away with an MC speaking on a microphone for a large portion of the day, and this noise carries well throughout the rooms of the buildings. Also, the buildings are exposed inside to the elements, we experienced a massive thunderstorm which resulted in the hallways and rooms partially flooding. The staff was unable to accommodate a room switch or upgrade. In addition, we had an ant infestation problem. One of our largest concerns and downfalls of the trip was the paper-thin walls which seperate the rooms. The staff, again, was unwilling to accommodate a room change. Lastly, if you've ever visited Canal Street in New York City, well, that is the best way to describe the atmosphere surrounding the main pool during the late afternoon/evening. The locals come in, setup vendor tables, and hock you to death to purchase necklaces, paintings, etc. They literally beg for your money!!!

A Disappointing Trip
PostedSeptember 14, 2009
Overall, the hotel was just okay. It was pretty and reasonably clean. However some of the staff did not seem overly eager to assist us with anything. There was a bat in our room that my husband had to catch in a garbage can and let outside. Several other nights after that we heard bats in the ceiling but left the light on so that they would not come out. My husband called and left a message with the concierge but we never heard anything back. The food was terrible for the most part, and there were only 1 or 2 restaurants open for breakfast and lunch. All the others were only open for dinner. I became ill towards the end of our trip, not sure if it was from the water or the food. They say that the drinking water is purified and do not drink the water from the faucets. I didnt think it would be a problem to brush my teeth with the faucet water but maybe that was a mistake. The people at the towel stand were rude and I was almost afraid to ask for a new towel each day. The hotel was an hour and a half away by car from the Santo Domingo airport. If you decide to travel here, you may want to see if the airline you choose goes to La Romana airport, which is much closer.

More Boom Boom Less ""Spa"" but still very nice
PostedMay 30, 2009
My husband and I stayed here in May 2009 for a week long prescripion of R&R. We definitly found our R&R but I must say that it took a little creativity on our part. The hotel certainly caters to an ""all-inclusive"" crowd who can't get enough of the (cheesy) entertanment activities and the endless amounts of alcohol. But we made the most of our trip and found a quiet, relaxing area of the beach (away from the ""boom boom"" music) where we went every day and practically had our spot all to ourselves. For all meals (the food is actually quite good) we ate at the restaurants, away from the buffet loving crowds (at no extra cost). The resort is somewhat isolated so its not as easy to get away and check out the real DR but we were able to get a taxi one day to check out Altos de Chavon and another day we were able to rent a car to truly explore the island. Don't get me wrong this is a great place to stay - the water is beautiful, the grounds are beautiful, the staff is very nice, the restaurants and outdoor patio furniture are suprisingly very chic, but if you are looking for a some ""tranquilo"" R&R you'll have to do a little extra work to find it. Lastly, (and this may be a deal breaker for some) - the walls are literally paper thin - so you will know your neighbors very well...we changed rooms a couple times, in effort to find some quiet, and the staff was very accomodating to do this but its worthwhile to note. If you do go, enjoy your time and we highly recommend the Lobster dinner on the beach and the Jungle Restuarant!

Romantic Getaway
PostedDecember 28, 2008
This was our first trip in many years and I must say that the people here were so so friendly and went that extra mile to make your stay a special one.No reservations required at any of the dinning areas . The dinner partys on the beach were something special, classy and fun. The beach was clean and there was lots of fun things to do there. Most of all we felt very safe there .
